”Mona Lisa” is one of the most popular paintings of all time and it is considered a masterpiece created by the one and only Leonardo Da Vinci. When you take a look at this work of art you can see her half-smiling but some say there’s more to it than that.
Some suggest that she’s pregnant because of the way she keeps her hands on her belly. Another reason for people to believe that the pregnancy speculation is indeed true is the fact that she wears a dark veil around her shoulder, a veil worn only by pregnant women during the Renaissance period.
One huge discovery is hidden in her eyes. An Italian researcher, Silvano Vinceti, claimed in 2011 that there are letters and numbers painted in her eyes. He implies that the letter “L” is put over the right eye, and probably indicates the artist’s name. Her left eye hides the letter ”S” and the number ”72”. Vinceti is inclined to think that the ”S” refers to a certain woman from the Sforza dynasty that ruled Milan in that period of time.
He also says that the woman in the painting may not be Lisa Gherardini, as it was far believed for so long. His explication for the number ”72” he claims that is can be interpreted due to the meaning of the number in Christianity and Judaism. Number ”7” refers to world creation while ”2” is about the duality of women and men.
Another speculation, even more recent, in 2015 made by a French scientist sustains that underneath this painting is another woman’s portrait. This discovery was made using reflective light technology. The explanation he has for this is that the painting underneath was da Vinci’s draft who was painted over to create this masterpiece.
