Napoleon Bonaparte was once one of the most powerful men in Europe, but he experienced an ignominious defeat at the hands of rabbits. After his military victory, Napoleon’s chief of staff arranged a rabbit hunt to celebrate.
Thousands of rabbits were brought in to be unleashed, but instead of hopping away when the cages were opened, they turned to attack, swarming the party-goers. After trying unsuccessfully to make them go away, the great Emperor Napoleon ran for the safety of his carriage.
22. Apple Pie isn’t actually American.
Apples are originated in Asia. The first pies were made in medieval Europe. Even the idea of putting apples in pie dates back to a recipe from England in 1381. Furthermore, the expression “as American as apple pie” only came into common use in 1924 and became a popular saying in the years of the Second World War.
